UNDERGROUND RIETI
Under today's Via Roma, you can admire a marvelous glimpse of Italy buried: the remains of the Roman viaduct built in the 3rd century BC as a consequence of the Roman conquest and alongside the reclamation work on the plain. This artifact, crossing the Velino river, allowed the Via Salaria, the ancient salt route, to reach the city avoiding flooding and swamping, thus assuming an extremely important role for the Roman Reate who needed a direct connection with the city . The structure, incorporated in the basements of some noble Rieti houses, is formed by grandiose arches built with huge square blocks of cavernous travertine, supporting the street level. The Salaria consular after passing the Velino river, through the solid stone bridge where the deep furrows left by the wheels of the carts used for transporting salt are still visible, reached the forum, located where the present Vittorio Emanuele II square extends , and turning right on Via Garibaldi formed the ancient cardo and decumanus. A fascinating and surprising world, witness of the city's past |
